Tell the Unified (North South) Korean Women's Hockey Team: We're Cheering for You! And, Peace.: The North and South Korean governments have recently decided that their countries will march together under the same flag and field a combined team for the Pyeongchang Olympics starting February 9th. This is BIG: for thousands of years, Korea was one unified country that was subsequently divided in half by war in the 1940s and 1950s. For 68 years, the Korean people have been torn apart.
The Olympics are about more than just sports. The unified Korean Women’s Hockey team is a first step toward diplomacy not only between North and South Korea, but also between the U.S. and North Korea. We -must- seize our opportunity to deescalate global tensions while giving these world-class athletes the recognition and respect that they deserve. Add your name below in support of the unified Korean hockey team!
The state of U.S. foreign policy right now, with its nuclear twitter taunts and use of obscene language to disparage non-white countries, puts the whole of humanity at risk. Americans, particularly women who grew up with ample athletic opportunities following Title IX, should not let the hard work and sacrifice of our sisters on Team Korea go unnoticed.
The players have battled injuries, endured long commutes and punishing trainings to, as their warm up shirts say, “Make Korea Proud.” When they take the ice for the first time together as one team, let’s let them know how grateful and proud WE are for their leadership for diplomacy and peace!
